Alia O'Hana, née en 1973 à Casablanca, est une artiste franco-marocaine. Elève de Barnaby Ruhe et d'Elliott Barrowitz à la Gallatin School de New York, elle poursuit son apprentissage auprès de Louise Bourgeois dans le cadre des « Sunday Salons ». Elle s'inscrit dans la continuité du mouvement néo-expressionniste abstrait de la fin des années 1990.
Sa peinture se caractérise par une démarche stylistique profondément intime, puisant avec virtuosité dans la puissance expressive de l'abstraction pour y développer une grammaire universelle de l'expérience sensible. Au sein d'une oeuvre à la fois poétique, autobiographique, mais aussi brutale, son travail récent porte sur la multiplicité parfois conflictuelle des identités culturelles, et sur l'espoir d'une résolution par l'expression picturale.
Alya O’Hana, born in 1973 in Casablanca, is a Franco–Moroccan artist. A pupil of Barnaby Ruhe and Elliott Barrowitz at the Gallatin School in New York, she continued her studies with Louise Bourgeois as part of the “Sunday Salons.” She belongs to the continuity of the abstract neo-expressionist movement that emerged in the late 1990s.
Her painting is characterized by a deeply intimate stylistic approach, drawing with great virtuosity on the expressive power of abstraction to develop a universal grammar of sensory experience.
Within a body of work that is at once poetic and autobiographical, yet also brutal, her recent work focuses on the sometimes-conflicting multiplicity of cultural identities and on the hope for resolution through pictorial expression.
